FAQs
Can I use the flame without the heat?
Yes. The flame effect runs independently, so you get the glow with no warmth on a mild evening. On most models it does not work the other way round, as the heater only operates while the flame effect is on.
Do electric fireplaces need a chimney or flue?
No. There is no combustion and no smoke, so nothing needs venting. Every model plugs into a standard 240V outlet, which is why they suit apartments and rentals where a flue is not an option.
Are electric fireplaces safe around children and pets?
They have overheat protection that cuts power automatically, and tempered glass fronts that stay cool to touch. Nothing burns, so there is no carbon monoxide, no sparks and no ash.
Are they certified for use in Australia?
Yes. Every model carries SAA certification, the Australian electrical safety approval. Several also hold CE, GS or CSA marks from other markets.
What does an electric fireplace cost to run?
A 1500W heater uses 1.5kWh per hour, which is roughly 45 to 50 cents at typical Australian rates. The 750W setting halves that. Flame-only mode uses a few watts and costs almost nothing.
Do they need professional installation?
No. Freestanding models just need a power point. Mantel models take around 45 minutes to assemble with a screwdriver. Wall mounted and built-in units need wall fixing, and our guides cover the clearances.
Can I put a TV above an electric fireplace?
Yes, and it is a common setup. Leave adequate clearance so rising warm air does not sit against the screen. Our guide on mounting a TV above a fireplace covers the recommended distances.
Do electric fireplaces need maintenance?
Very little. Wipe the glass and surround with a dry cloth now and then, and keep the vents free of dust. There is no ash, no soot, no chimney and no annual service.
Which type suits a rental?
A freestanding model. It needs no wall fixing and no permanent installation, so it moves with you. Mantel models also work since they stand on the floor and only plug in.
How do I choose the right electric fireplace for my space?
Pro-Tip: Start by thinking about your room size, preferred installation style, and overall interior aesthetic. Mantel designs create a classic centrepiece, wall-mounted fireplaces suit contemporary spaces, and freestanding options offer versatility. It’s also worth checking heat settings, flame brightness options, and timer functions to find the perfect balance of comfort and style.
