Bookcases & Shelves

Every piece in this collection is made from solid pine rather than particleboard or laminate — a real timber that takes knocks without chipping at the edges and can be sanded or repainted years down the track. Pine is light enough to move between rooms on your own, yet strong enough to hold a full shelf of books. The natural grain shows through the finish, so each unit carries a little character of its own rather than the flat uniformity of a printed surface.

Open shelving earns its place by being flexible. Fill the cubbies with books spine-out for a classic library look, or mix in woven baskets to hide the things you'd rather not display. Group objects in odd numbers, vary the heights, and leave one or two compartments deliberately empty so the whole unit has room to breathe. Add greenery or a small vase at the top to draw the eye upward, and the piece reads as décor rather than storage.

The house-shaped silhouette is what sets these apart from a standard rectangular bookcase. The pitched roofline softens a hard corner and adds a point of interest to an otherwise plain wall — which is why a house bookshelf works as well in a reading nook or guest room as it does in a child's bedroom. At 147cm it sits below eye level, keeping sightlines open in smaller rooms, and the lower cubbies stay within easy reach whoever is using them.

These units arrive flat-packed with step-by-step instructions and need only basic tools to assemble. Once up, maintenance is minimal: dust with a soft dry cloth, wipe spills promptly, and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that can strip the finish from timber. Keep the unit out of prolonged direct sunlight to stop the pine from fading unevenly, and check the fixings are snug every so often, particularly if you've loaded the shelves with books.
